Are Mentors Great Influencers or a Change Agent? – A Personal Point of View

One concept that’s very much in trend RN is hiring mentors. The mentors are believed to provide you with several benefits. Mentoring is like an extra organ that offers support to function better; like an extra ear to listen, a mouth to tell you what to do, and a constant reminder to move forward on the right path.

To be precise, a mentor aids you shorten your learning curve, lets you think out of the box, identify and explore new opportunities and supervise you to execute your plans and accomplish your goals.

However, a doubt that always persists in mind is whether a mentor is a great influencer or an agent of change? This blog is dedicated to the discussion of differences between the two. Nevertheless, in my point of view, both the concepts are somewhat digestible and somewhere holds true.

Let’s now discuss both the ideas, one by one.

Concept 1: Mentors are Influencers

Mentors generally invest their energy, vision and intuitions when they establish a relationship with the mentee. Due to their sheer involvement in the process and by monitoring and mentoring every action, it is very likely that a coach/mentor has a ton of impact on their mentee.

Since a mentor is in other words a “guide” to the person who hires him, their primary duty is to guide and support the mentee. However, it is the mentee that ought to decide what he truly wants to do. A mentor will then be able to pose inquiries, do the research, use his experience, story tell and effectively tune in to have the option to give the best direction s/he can.

Thus, directly or indirectly, a mentor can be the influencer, especially in a case where the mentee needs to settle on the choice. A mentor is generally able to influence because they know how to influence their clients through their basic reasoning abilities and be able to pose their point of view on the one who lacks a solid point of view. It is positive most of the time as it ultimately helps the mentee to explore new horizons, give them a better perception and opens their mind.

I am constantly amazed, how mentors can impact and change people’s lives as guides.

Concept 2: Mentors are Agents of Change

Agent of Change or Change Agents are those who develop a change in the organization or the overall altered outcome.

Since mentoring is both ways confided in a relationship, the coach and mentee will learn and develop  hand in hand as they go forward in the journey. It is a path for growth and personal development. Especially when you’re not an experienced mentor, you would change and allow your mentee to change all at one fell swoop. It is through the procedure of mentoring that both will become familiar with themselves as they invest energy in the process.

It ultimately helps the mentee to yield better results and unexpected growth in most cases which is clearly an example of mentors being an agent of change.

The Bottom Line

Whether it is you believe that a mentor is an influencer, or truly an agent of change, either way it only helps the mentee in the process.

Hiring a mentor is critical, especially in today’s overly competitive scenario where a person with a mentor, a coach or a professional trainer seems to have an edge over the people who don’t.
